Tremor

A model of 5-7 storied building has to be designed with a minimum plan area specified whose stability would be testing on shake table.

Full description about the event can be found HERE.

Competition:

  • The Model will be mounted and Lead Weights will be loaded.
  • Earthquake-Resistant Test will be done.

Dimensions:

  • Minimum plan area of each floor is 400 sq.cm.
  • The minimum distance between any two columns is 12 cm.
  • The maximum plan dimensions of any floor should not exceed is 32 cm x 32 cm.
  • The minimum distance between any two columns is 12 cm.
  • Size of Structural Members
Maximum size of structural members are:
    1. Beam : 12 mm * 20 mm
    2. Column : 20 mm * 20 mm
    3. Bracings : 10 mm * 12 mm

Supplied Components:

Material Specification Quantity
Timber Strips 1000 mm * 10 mm * 4 mm 190 sticks
Cotton String Cotton Twines no. 6 4 m
PVC Hot Melt Glue Stick For column base connection --
Fevicol 85 gm 2
Baseboard 400 mm * 400 mm * 10 mm 1
Plywood (for Shear Wall) 150 mm * 2500 mm * 8 mm --
Plywood (for Slabs) 320 mm * 320 mm * 6 mm 7

Failure Conditions

A model is deemed to have failed under following conditions:
  • Complete collapse of the model.
  • Collapse of one or more storeys.
  • The model has deformed excessively (maximum lateral permanent deformation is more than 14% of the gross building height).
  • Half or more than half of the columns are detached from the base board.
  • Any of lead weights falling off from one of the floors.
  • Violation Penalty
    Teams will be disqualified if:
    • Using other materials that are not specified in the rules.
    • The Dimensions are not adhered to.

Rules and Regulations:

  • Each team needs to submit an abstract which would contain the proposed model of the building, a brief analysis and drawings (showing all dimensions). Those teams which submit a SAP model file would be encouraged.
  • The abstracts need to be submitted latest by 23:59 hrs - 19th September, 2010 to the coordinators in word format.
  • Based on the quality of abstracts, the teams which are shortlisted, would be given the materials and other components to proceed for the construction.

Team Specifications:

  • Due to the overwhelming response from the students, and huge turn-up in the introductory lecture, we have decided that multiple entries would be allowed from a Pool.
  • The teams can have a maximum of four members.
