Gearloose
The objective for this competition is to design a vehicle that will travel down an incline, launch itself clear over a wall, and land the furthest from the wall without going out of the sandbox.
The following are the rules, descriptions, and specifications for the competition.
Rules and Regulations:
- At the start of the run the vehicle must be placed and released from the top of the incline.
- The only source of energy allowed in getting the vehicle pass the line will be potential energy. The use of any other source will result in immediate disqualification.
- At any moment, after the entire vehicle has passed the marked line, the vehicle must launch itself over a wall having a length, height, and depth of 24” x 4” x 1” respectively.
- The vehicle must not come in contact with the wall at any time.
- The initial touch point of the vehicle to the ground must be within the sandbox.
Arena:
Vehicle Specifications:
- The dimensions of the vehicle must not exceed a length of 12" and a width and height of 4".
- All components used must be part of the vehicle and must remain attached to the vehicle at all times.
- Only non-electrical sources can be used. They must not pose any kind of danger to the spectators and the competitors. NO EXPLOSIVES OR CHEMICAL REACTANTS OF ANY KIND WILL BE PERMITTED.
- The launching mechanism may be some sort of spring, wind up mechanism, compressed air, etc. All parts must remain with the vehicle at all times.
- The only power allowed for the vehicle to get passed the marked line (see fig.) will be potential energy.
Scoring:
- If the vehicle comes in contact with the wall zero points will be awarded for that run.
- After clearing the wall, the vehicle must land in the sandbox.
- The distance will be measured from the base of the wall to the first point of the contact with the sandbox.
- Bonus points will be provided if the vehicle lands on its feet.
